DESCRIPTION
Kublai Khan (1215 - 1294), leader of the Mongol Empire, had the Great Armillary Sphere made by his astronomer in what is now Beijing. The armillary sphere, or astrolabe, was a celestial sphere used for centuries in the East to aid observations of the stars. Engraved by Q. Cenni and lithographer George Frauenfelder, after a photograph by J. Thomson (d. 1885). Published in 1874 in a comprehensive biography of Marco Polo, who saw the new Armillary Sphere during his expedition to the East, it is now in the public domain.
